1. Challenge: Hidden internal endosperm cracks causing broken grains during milling
During wet-season harvest or rapid high-temperature drying, paddy kernels experience moisture shock that causes internal stress cracks (fissured kernels). Under standard ambient lighting, the kernels look completely intact and flawless.
However, the moment these grains pass through rubber hullers and whitening friction chambers, mechanical shear force fractures the fissures into small broken pieces. Broken rice spikes from 5% to 15–20%, causing significant financial losses for mill operators.
Top-down white lighting reflects only surface bran layers and cannot detect internal starch crystal fractures. An optical transmission method is needed that will not heat the grains or distort the scanning tray.
2. Dual-spectrum optical principle: Combining surface reflection and backlight transmission
GV GrainScan integrates a synchronized dual-phase optical lighting module:
• Phase 1 (Reflected Illumination): Coaxial ring LED lighting at 45 degrees captures surface color, gloss, fungal spots, and geometric contours. • Phase 2 (Transmitted Illumination): A polarized backlight flat matrix projects light through the base of the optical tray, illuminating the grain core. Any internal crack creates refractive light scattering, revealing the fissure as a distinct dark shadow line.
3. Sub-surface light scattering algorithms detecting micro-fissures
Transmitted images are fed into a Sub-surface Light Scattering AI model. The model calculates pixel density gradients across grain cross-sections, classifying single fissures, network fissures, and internal shattering.
The dual-phase scan takes only 1.8 seconds for a 2,000-grain tray, generating an exact Fissured Kernel Rate report.
“Knowing that a grain will break before it enters the milling chamber is the key to maximizing head rice recovery rates.”
4. Adjusting mill roller settings using real-time fissure data
When high fissure rates are detected early at the intake gate, the system recommends loosening roller clearances, lowering polisher air pressure, and splitting polishing into three gentle passes rather than two aggressive ones.
This reduces in-chamber grain breakage by up to 40%, lifting export head rice recovery by 1.2% to 1.8% of total volume.
5. Continuous 24/7 industrial operation and thermal control
The GV GrainScan optical chamber is built with an IP54 dust-resistant anodized aluminum enclosure and automatic white-balance recalibration every 50 scan cycles to ensure uniform data across continuous day-and-night shifts.

Using transmitted light to reveal hidden endosperm fissures is brilliant! We frequently suffer yield loss from moisture shock after drying.
